Dr. Charles E. Young is a native of Georgetown County, South Carolina. He attended the public schools of Georgetown County and graduated from Choppee High School.
After serving in the United States Army, his desire to improve himself led him to Virginia Union University in Richmond, Virginia, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Biology. However, after his conversion and answering the call to preach, he set aside his pursuit of medical science. He enrolled at Columbia International University, Columbia, South Carolina, earning a Master of Divinity. Dr. Young further strengthened his ministry skills by completing additional studies in urban Church planting at Westminster Theological Seminary, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He later earned a Ph.D. in Systematic Theology from Trinity Theological Seminary in Evansville, Indiana.
He is married to the former Sandra Archer, and together they have two children, Charlotte (Shola) and Christopher (Kristen), and three grandchildren, Tolu, Israel, and Emanuel.
Dr. Young's professional career is a testament to his unwavering commitment to theological education and pastoral ministry. He has served as President of Allen University, professor of urban church planting and Christian Theology at Columbia International University, and associate professor of preaching and pastoral ministry at Allen University. Dr. Young also served full-time as pastor of three congregations in the Seventh Episcopal District. His pastoral ministry focused on church growth, discipleship training, and developing ministries for the elderly and youth. He led his congregations in capital improvements, community development, housing initiatives, and economic development, demonstrating his deep commitment to his community.
His advocacy for fair housing and education for the underserved has left a lasting impact. As chair of Charleston Empowerment Community, he spearheaded initiatives to provide affordable housing for low-income families. He also served as President of a Community Development Non-Profit organization, leading efforts to improve educational opportunities for underprivileged youth.
Since 2016, Dr. Young has served as the Presiding Elder of the Midlands District of the Seventh Episcopal District of the African Methodist Episcopal Church. In this role, he is one of the middle managers for the Presiding Bishop of the Seventh Episcopal District, supervising and supporting pastors and their congregations.
Dr. Young’s lifelong goal has been to improve the lives of those he serves and to add value to all who cross his path.
